Welcome to this week’s edition of Weird Parenting News. This week we’ve got some strange stories, from 911 callers with grudges to the hidden dangers of breastfeeding. And to commemorate the last days of summer, we’ve even got a story about a special delivery at the Jersey shore. Don’t miss these odd news items from the past week!
Breast is best… except when it’s not. Is nothing sacred? New research by scientists at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston and Danish institutions reveals that breast milk contains high levels of industrial chemicals called perfluorinated alkylate substances (PFASs). These toxic chemicals, found in stainproof textiles, waterproof clothing, and some food packaging, have been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and interfere with the immune and reproductive systems. Abusing the system. In a crazy story out of Kentucky, a former state social worker with a grudge against her neighbors made multiple anonymous calls falsely accusing the couple of abusing their baby (including hanging the baby off a balcony). She knew that every claim would have to be investigated, sending police and social workers to harass the poor family — until she was finally arrested. Read all about it.
Jersey shore can’t wait. Speaking of 911, a father placed a frantic 911 call when his wife went into labor while they were stuck in traffic coming home from the Jersey shore. Fortunately, an EMT was in the car behind them, and baby Bella Rose was delivered safely — in the front seat of the family’s car. Read the story here.
